Mutual funds are popular because they represent safetyAverage mutual fund buyers are too busy working to pay taxes and mortgages, save for their children's college and pay off credit cards They do not have time to study to learn how to invest, so they rely on the expertise of the manager of a mutual fundAlso, because the mutual fund includes many different types of investments, they feel their money is safer because ii is "diversified
This group of educated middle class subscribes to the "diversify" dogma put out by mutual fund brokers and financial planners
The real tragedy is that the lack of early financial education is what creates the risk faced by average middle class peopleThe reason they have to play it safe is because their financial positions are tenuous at best Their balance sheets are not balancedThey are loaded with liabilities, with no real assets that generate incomeTypically, their only source of income is their paycheckTheir livelihood becomes entirely dependent on their employer
So when genuine "deals of a lifetime" come along, those same people cannot take advantage of the opportunityThey must play it safe, simply because they are working so hard, are taxed to the max, and are loaded with debt
As I said at the start of this section, the most important rule is to know the difference between an asset and a liability Once you understand the difference, concentrate your efforts on only buying income-generating assets That's the best way to get started on a path to becoming rich Keep doing that, and your asset column will growFocus on keeping liabilities and expenses downThis will make more money available to continue pouring into the asset columnSoon, the asset base will be so deep that you can afford to look at more speculative investments Investments that may have returns of 100 percent to infinityInvestments that for $5,000 are soon turned into $1 million or moreInvestments that the middle class calls "too risky The investment is not risky It's the lack of simple financial intelligence, beginning with financial literacy, that causes the individual to be "too risky,"
If you do what the masses do, you get the following pict

“BlindWorld?” I said again, my voice now disapproving
“Yes, well, some who have lived there prefer to call it the Singing World
“And some who've never been there call it Planet of the Bats,” the Seeker muttered
I turned my eyes to her, feeling them narrow as my mind dredged up the appropriate image of
the ugly flying rodent she referred to
“I assume you are one who has never lived there, Seeker,” the Healer said lightly“We called

personalityWhen we questioned him about this, he claimed to have no memory of certain
statements and actionsWe continued to observe him, along with his Comforter, and eventually
discovered that the host was periodically taking control of Kevin's body
“Taking control?” My eyes strained wide“With the soul unaware? The host took the body

    flinch
The Healer continued“Certain events occurred, and it was decided –”
    “What events?”

@@@@@The Japanese had been dead for a week, and they had swollen to the dimensions of very obese men with enormous legs and bellies, and buttocks which split their clothingThey had turned green and purple and the maggots festered in their wounds and covered their feet
Each maggot was about a half inch long and it looked like a slug except that it was the color of a fish's bellyThe maggots covered the dead bodies the way bees cluster over the head of a beekeeperIt was impossible to see any longer where the wounds had been, for the maggots covered every bit of ruptured flesh and crawled sluggishly over all the minor sores on the corpseGallagher watched drunkenly while a train of maggots filed into the gaping mouth of the dead manSomehow he expected the maggots to make some sound, and their rapt noiseless feeding angered himThe stench was acute and flies lusted over the corpses
"Goddam flies," he mutteredHe walked around a body and picked up a small paper carton which was lying on the groundThe cardboard was sodden and fell apart in his hands; he picked out a few tiny vials which contained a dark liquid, and looked morosely at them for a few seconds"What are these?" he askedNo one answered, and after a moment he threw them to the ground again"What I want to know is where the fug is the souvenirs?"
Wilson was trying to remove the bolt from a rusted rifle"Ah'm gonna get me one of them sammerigh swords one of these days," he announcedHe prodded a corpse with the butt of the Japanese rifle, and made a face"Goddam carrion, that's all we are, men, goddam carrion A few ribs were protruding from the cadaverous chest and in the late afternoon light they had a silver sheenThe exposed flesh had turned a sickly brown-green"Look jus' like a shoulder o' lamb," Wilson statedHe sighed again, and began to wander off down the ridgeThere were a few natural caves on the reverse slope, and in one of them were a half dozen dead men piled over many boxes and crates"Hey, men," Wilson yelled, "Ah found ya somethin' He was proud of himselfThe drunken taunts of the others had hurt his feel

    @@@@@Her eyes
glowed with pleasure when she moved from room to room to check
    that
everything was readyThank heaven Pansy was
    back
from TaraShe was very good at making the other servants do their
jobs, much better than the new butler hired to replace PorkScarlett
took a glass of champagne from the tray the new man held out to her
At least he was good at serving, quite stylish in fact, and Scarlett
did so like for things to be stylish
Just then the doorbell soundedShe startled the manservant by
    smiling
happily, then she moved towards the entrance hall to greet her
    friends
They arrived in a steady stream for almost an hour and the house
    filled
with the sound of loud voices, the overpowering smell of perfume and

    sapphires
Scarlett moved through the melee smiling and laughing, flirting idly
with the men, accepting the fulsome compliments of the womenThey
were so happy to see her again, they'd missed her so much, no one's
parties were as exciting as hers, no one's home as beautiful, no one's

Hearn sat up a little straighter in his chairThe noon sun, harsh now that the overcast had blown away, glinted cruelly over the bivouac, threw into bold relief the shadows under the flaps of the tentAbout a hundred yards away, on a downhill slope through the sparse foliage, Cummings watched the chow line, two hundred and fifty men long, trudge slowly forward
